Dear father,
It has been a long and tiring day. The Union marched through town and destroyed everything they touched. Farms and establishments crumble to the ground. Homes destroyed, citizens were given no mercy. My fellow soldiers and I were assigned to help those in need; the moment we arrived, I couldn't believe what was in front of my eyes. I saw a woman sprawled on the found trying to pick up broken pieces of glass. As I drew nearer towards the woman, her sobs became more audible. She was on the ground trying to pick up pieces of a broken photograph of her dear husband. Tsk! These yanks don't know how to act! Apparently, her husband was trying to protect their local grocery shop but was brutally beaten in trying to do so. The billy yanks then raided their house and damaged their property. I helped the woman pick up her belongings and help others nearby as well. The Union might have destroyed Atlanta but did not succeed in destroying our spirit.
Sincerely,
Your loving son William
